At the October WMN Advisory Board…..

…. we talked about our busiest month ever !! Settlement services and ESL groups busy, new volunteer tutors recruited, the Welcome Centre and drop-in activities popular, a Japanese Multicultural Community Kitchen, the Peer Educator Program, a multicultural cookbook, and our new Parenting Across Cultures program… In October…

  • the 2017 Immigrant Peer Educator Program started with 8 people. So far, we’ve talked about how the Peer Educator program works, covered listening skills, discussed boundaries and self-care, and looked at culture shock and how important language skills are.
  • a focus group for Parenting Across Cultures was held with 17 parents and about 10 children. We had parents of children from 3 months to 17 years old come along to share what it’s like to be a parent in another culture. Lots of discussion was had, and people generally agreed they’d like to have more get togethers for immigrant parents. The Parenting Across Cultures program starts November and we’ll be developing ideas to keep these sessions going. We’ll be looking for lots of input, ideas and suggestions for that too.
  • ESL groups are busy, and at the end of October, an information session to recruit new volunteer ESL tutors was held. ESL tutors volunteer their time for free, and commit to working with a learner for up to 2 hours a week, for six months. it’s a great way to work on your English if your schedule means getting to a group is difficult. By the end of November, those tutors should be trained and ready to support learners, so if you’re interested in working with a tutor, or know someone who is, let us know.
  • Our Multicultural Community Kitchen in October was Japanese. Rumi taught us how to cook miso soup, okonomiyaki (savory pancakes) and shiratama dango (sweet glutinous rice dumplings). Yum!
  • the 2017 Multicultural Cookbook is almost ready to be printed – 10 recipes from community kitchens and Festival food plus stories from the cooks. The cookbook will be ready to buy at our Christmas party and potluck on December 3rd (watch out for details and your invitation) – what a great Christmas present for friends and family…

Our next Advisory Board meeting is on Monday November 27, 5.40 in the Welcome Centre at the library. Why not come along for a preview of the Cookbook, and help start planning for 2018!!
